Janissary Pony by AaronMk Janissary Pony by AaronMk
EQD's ATG 2, day 14: draw an exotic pony.

Once upon a time, the middle east was a land of exotic mystery. A captivating world where the old ways persisted. Now... well let's not go there.

I figured I'd draw a pony dressed as a Ottoman Janissary. It's rather exotic, right? Figured in an age of Asia being persistent in western media breaking to the lands between east-and-west would be more exotic than overrated samurai and ninjas.

Alternatively, I could have done a Zebra dressed as a Zulu. That was an alternative. But I really like this hat.

Middle East? The vast majority Janissaries were (initially) Muslim converts from the Balkans!

Okay, I guess the Janissaries were soldiers of the Ottoman Empire, but the fact remains that most of them were not Middle Eastern!

I just looked up "Janissary" on Derpibooru and this was the only thing that came up. This is exactly why I have you in my Watching thing.

For some reason, I feel like he'd sound like the Swedish Chef regardless of the fact that Sweden is in Europe and is totally different from Turkey.

"Horb dee borb dee borb!"

As a history nerd, seeing this brings joy to me beyond expression. I like the sound of that Zulu idea too. In fact, now you have me imagining Mamluk and Cossack ponifications...

Lol.

Well, my last ATG picture involved a hybridization of Mamluke horse armor with Canterlot Guard and Luna's charioteer's dress. So, that's a start.
